"Cutshin Mountain" story concert
SAAC's Out-Of-Towners Series kicks off with a special collaboration between two master storytellers, Elizabeth Ellis and Tim Tingle, sharing the stage for a tale set in Appalachia during WWI:
"Cutshin Mountain"
family, the heart's own compass,
always points us back toward home.
DESCRIPTION: The seed of this story comes from a late night movie Tim saw on television when he was eight or so. Although the details faded over the years, the idea made a lasting impression. He told his version of the story and was struck by how it touched his listeners. When he decided to expand the story, he invited Elizabeth to work on it with him because it was set in Appalachia.
Since both Tim and Elizabeth keep rugged calendars, most of the major concepts for the work have been developed while they were riding in vehicles together. Once the story was divided into scenes, they went to work individually. They share a common process of telling a scene to themselves over and over until it reaches a polished form. That work was shared by cell phone while hiding between tents at festivals. or waiting for a tire to be changed on a Utah mountain, or while waiting for flights at airports.
Besides their common process, Tim and Elizabeth share a love of roots music, old hymns and poetry. Those things just naturally found their way into the telling, like the stitches that hold a quilt together, warm and comforting.
